We are sustained and fulfilled by the eternal flow of Love. There is nothing else. Why then are we tricked so easily into believing that we are sustained by the material resources, career, and food?
In Lesson 50, A Course in Miracles, it says: “In this world, you believe you are sustained by everything but God. Your faith is placed in the most trivial and insane symbols; pills, money, “protective” clothing, influence, prestige, being liked, knowing the “right” people, and an endless list of forms of nothingness that you endow with magical powers. All these things are your replacements for the Love of God. All these things are cherished to ensure a body identification. They are songs of praise to the ego. Do not put your faith in the worthless. It will not sustain you.” (W.50.1:2-3, 2)
We believe that we can be sustained by various substitutes of Love because we came to believe that we are temporary bodies instead of eternal Spirit. By accepting this limited view of ourselves we accept the whole package. Small and fragile bodies do need constant protection, their associated ego identities need to be supported and maintained. In the meanwhile, the eternal protection of peace and joy is always available to us. In fact, this is the only kind of protection that does not fail.
In Lesson 50, we are encouraged to put our faith in the Love of God and let it resolve our worries with ease and grace: “Only the Love of God will protect you in all circumstances. It will lift you out of every trial, and raise you high above all the perceived dangers of this world into a climate of perfect peace and safety. It will transport you into a state of mind that nothing can threaten, nothing can disturb, and where nothing can intrude upon the eternal calm of the Son of God. Put not your faith in illusions. They will fail you. Put all your faith in the Love of God within you; eternal, changeless and forever unfailing. This is the answer to whatever confronts you today. Through the Love of God within you, you can resolve all seeming difficulties without effort and in sure confidence.” (W.50.3, 4:1-5)
As we learn to give our concerns over to the Spirit, we notice that no effort is required on our part. Confidence is a natural result of trusting that the Love of God has all the answers for me. A state of peace and quiet surety that comes as we practice putting ourselves in God’s hands is so precious that no false idol can ever compare to it.
The logic of the world often says that we must give in order to receive. Isn’t it simply an exchange instead of an organic outpouring of joy from the heart? Lesson 108 in A Course in Miracles says, “To give and to receive are one in truth.” True giving doesn’t originate from our limited personalities and is not restricted by them. It doesn’t need to be planned or prepared for. It is a natural and effortless process of being kind and gentle to each other.
Without giving there is no Life. There is only an illusion of action that is devoid of true vitality. Without a sincere desire to share from the heart our vital forces are temporarily asleep. For a brief moment, we may even forget that they are there. Active life is a life of extending the gifts of Spirit to everyone on our paths to the best of our abilities. As Saint Francis of Assisi beautifully said, “For it is in giving that we receive.”
Giving brings purpose and joy into our life. It empowers and enriches both parties, as we appreciate the true value of each other. I was talking to a friend this week about how one kind word or gesture can make a huge difference in someone’s life. This article summarizes four lessons that can be learned from a life of giving.
Upon reflecting on the natural flow of giving and receiving, I clearly saw them as one and the same. As each breath consists of an inhalation and an exhalation, life consists of giving and receiving. Through my giving I’m receiving, and whatever I’m withholding I’m actually keeping from myself. This motivates me to write these words because by sharing them I’m able to integrate them more fully in my life.
Action = Vitality = Life = Extending = Sharing = Giving = Joy = Receiving = Love
The following prayer from A Course in Miracles is a great way to start a day to be inspired to be truly helpful in any situation. Miracles happen when we bring this attitude to any situation. Robert Perry wrote a very insightful article on this well-known prayer.
I am here only to be truly helpful.
I am here to represent Him Who sent me.
I do not have to worry about what to say or what to do, because He Who sent me will direct me.
I am content to be wherever He wishes, knowing He goes there with me.
I will be healed as I let Him teach me to heal.
